Short Description
We show you how to create a W3C DOM compliant Table of Contents that runs in IE5 and Gecko.

In this article we explore using the W3C Document Object Model (DOM) recommendation and ECMA-262 (JavaScript) to automatically generate a table of contents for your page. The best part about this article is that the code based completely on approved standards and recommendations runs on both Internet Explorer 5.0 and the latest Gecko Developer preview.

Scott, you say there's a demo now available as part of the article. Where is it? I looked in the "Demonstration" section.

I have a similar need, to update this scripting to the DOM (it's a small trivial example):

I was hoping your article would solve the problem for me. In IE, you can get or set the innerHTML of a tag. Very simple, very easy interface. Apparently not so easy in the W3C DOM. Your getTextForElement is close, but it only gets the character data, not the subelement tags. Any ideas?

Great article, and useful code. I would have given it a 4, but the fact that it doesn't come with a working example brings it all the way down to a 1. Come on, guys, this is truly pathetic. How hard can it be to add a link to a working demo of the technique illustrated? That's the first (and often only) thing I want to see with a technique like this, and you don't even make it available. Give me a break. I hope to see this issue addressed!
